Social Media is a conversation between you (or your business entity) and your audience. The rules of good conversation apply in the digital world as well as in the face-to-face world. For an example of conversation rules, check this out.

To distill conversation rules into something quicker, if you want to engage a person, slant the conversation towards them. 65% them. 35% you. (Unless YOU are the brand and the product, then people are coming to your channels for more of YOU. We’ll cover that in another tip.)

In face-to-face conversation, people are turned off by overt sales pitches. Consider your interactions across social media to be your 30 second elevator speech. Let them come to you after they know you. Then you can pitch, because they’ve self-identified as being an interested party.
