Relevance: all Social Media channels

There is an unwritten, and seldom discussed, expectation in Social Media interactions: reciprocity.

Here are some examples…

I follow you on Twitter. The expectation is that you’ll follow me back, or vice versa.

I update my status with something important to me, and if it is also important to you, you’ll share it around. Perhaps not immediately, but in the not too distant future.

Do you reciprocate? Why? Why not?

Reciprocation is a basic expectation of people in face-to-face interactions. It is a tool for building and cementing relationships.

Social Media is all about building, maintaining, and enhancing the relationship between you (your business, or ideology) and your followers. If you give, you are more likely to receive.

Think about this: what are you giving your followers? Is it something useful to them, or just filler?
